Dryden MOPS

Hello and thanks for visiting!
Please contact www.mops.org for information on finding a mops group in the Cortland/Dryden/Ithaca area. Thanks!

Dryden MOPS is back! The 2012-2013 MOPS year is starting in November. We will be meeting at the Dryden United Methodist Church on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month from 9:00-11:00 am. The UM church is the large white church on the corner of main street next door to where we used to meet.
Here are the dates we will be meeting for the year:
November 14
November 28
December 12
January 9
January 23
February 13
February 27
March  13
March 27
April 10
April 24
May 8
May 22

As part of our move to the Methodist Church we are looking to take up a collection of old baby toys and baby items for the Mini MOPPETS nursery room. Items should be in the birth-age 2 range. If you have any old baby toys, gear, or books that you would like to donate for MOPS and the church it would be greatly appreciated. All gear can be dropped off at the UM church or at my house at 337 State Route 38, Dryden.
Also- if you have any basic craft supplies to add to our MOPS group such as glue, scissors, craft paper, ribbons, hole punches, paints or other basic supplies that you could part with please let us know! We would appreciate anything you can offer our group as we get started at our new location.
As always, if any of you are interested in speaking at a meeting or have a craft to help teach us that would be great as well. Please just let us know!
Please pass this email and flyer around to as many friends and family members as you think would be interested. We look forward to a successful and blessed MOPS year and hope to meet many new friends.

Friday, March 23rd Craft Night! Open to All!

Please join us on Friday March 23rd from 6:30-9:00pm at the Presbyterian church in Dryden. Mothers are welcome to invite their sisters, mothers, cousins and friends (just keep it women only please) so please feel free to pass this email around.

We will have the chance to make the following crafts for our own use or to make to give as gifts-

Decorated Glass Ornaments. Tile Necklaces, Ceramic Trivets, Perpetual Birthday CalendarClipboards, Stamped Cards,
Placemat Purses, Epsom salts, and the popular favorite, Freezer Paper Stenciling (bring your own clothing or fabric textiles to decorate)

Tables will be set up around the church with all needed supplies. We also ask that you bring a snack, drink, appetizer, or treat to share with the group. We will have a snack area set up for women to mingle and spend time connecting.

As mothers we so rarely get time to ourselves let alone time to craft. We hope this opportunity will allow you to relax, munch on some snacks, tap into your creative side and reconnect with friends.

This is meant to be a very relaxed event so if you want to come and stay for only a short time or you would like to come to eat and talk but not craft that is ok too. Make this night out whatever you need it to be. However, due to the cost of the supplies that we will need to have on hand, we are asking for a $7 donation per person. If this is not possible please let us know, we do not want to exclude anyone from attending this event.

Please respond if you are interested in coming so that we can plan for the amount of supplies that we will need.

If you would like more information please contact Amy at afaben@yahoo.com.

Hope to see you on 3/23/12

3/14 Meeting: Book Swap and Book Club Fun!

It's time to get ready for our BOOK EXCHANGE!!!!!!

Yes, that's right!  Time to pull out that book you loved but don't really want to read again, that book you didn't like but someone else might like.  On Wednesday, March 14, get ready because it's going to be great!

And...there will be a PRIZE for the person who brings the most books.  Will it be you?  Gather up those books, because maybe it will!

We will also be playing Pass The Hat (Book Themed)

This game is best in groups of about 10 people or less.

Think up one or more questions per person (if the group is large have one question per person, if it's smaller have more). Cut the paper up so that each question is on its own little bit of paper, fold the papers up and put them in some sort of container.

Take it in turns to pull a question out of the hat and answer the question. Once somebody has answered his/her particular question, other people might want to share their own answers.

You'll probably want to set a time limit per question in order to keep things moving along - you don't have to announce this up front, just keep an eye on the time yourself and move things along if necessary.

Example Questions:
  • What was the first book you remember reading/being read?
  • What is your favorite book of all time?
  • Which book has left the most lasting impression on you?
  • Which book have you read most frequently?
  • What books are on your bedside table at the moment?
  • Name one book/author that you really can't stand?
  • What type of books do you like reading most?
  • If you were given $30 to spend on a book today, what book would you buy?
  • Where's your favorite place to read?
  • Which character in a book do you think is most like you?
  • Which character in a book would you most like to be?
  • What book do you plan to read next?
  • Which literary character would you most like to have a 'significant relationship' with?

Tuesday

Speed Friending

Some times you just really need a good friend who "gets" it. At Dryden MOPS, we strive to bring women together to find those friends at each of our meeting, but this week, we're making it a special emphasis as we introduce...

Speed Friending

It's like speed dating without the dating. We'll get uninterrupted time *gasp, unheard of with little ones* to chat one-on-one with your MOPS friends. (Don't worry. There are conversation starters if you need/want them.)

After all, having good girlfriends lowers our stress, enhances our moods, protects us from diseases, increases our self-confidence and actually even helps bring healing to our bodies. So let's get together to lower our stress and feel better. See you soon!

Thursday

Git-R-Done... Again

Craft: Git-R-Done Stations

Description: Like last year, we will take a break from our regularly scheduled MOPS format and spend our MOPS meeting time focus on getting those little things done that we just never seen to have time for, like cleaning out your purse, making a meal plan and grocery list, or just plain catching up with friends.

We will also be freezer paper stenciling again (follow the link for more info), so if you want, bring a shirt or a bag or really anything fabric to fancy up.

Supplies: double-sided 12x12 scrapbook paper cut into 3/4" strips, paraffin wax, ornament hanger
Time: 30 minutes
Description: We'll be making these folded paper German Stars (aka Moravian Stars or Froebel Stars). It takes a bit of practice to get the folding down, but my four-years-old daughter can do with a little help from mom. MOPPETS Reminders...

Tomorrow is our first MOPS meeting of the year. I am the new MOPPETS Coordinator, so I wanted to remind you of a few things....
  • Drop off your child(ren) in the appropriate MOPPETS room.  Mini MOPPETS (infant - 2 years)will be in the downstairs nursery.  Maxi MOPPETS (2yrs-5yrs) will be in the upstairs classroom. If your child is 2 years old, please talk to me and we can decide which room they will be best in. (i.e. Does your 2 year old have an older sibling they would feel more comfortable with? We could put them in the Maxi MOPPETS room).
  • Please bring a drink for your son/daughter. You can pack a sippy cup, bottle or water bottle for your child.  This will make snack time much easier for our hard-working volunteers (and hopefully less mess!)
  • Be sure to label everything you bring in for you child.  This includes jackets, sweatshirts, diaper bags, backpacks, sippy cups, etc.
  • Each meeting MOPS will furnish a snack for your child. The Mini MOPPETS room will have dry cereal (Cheerios, etc) and the Maxi MOPPETS will have a granola bar, cheese/crackers, etc.  If you would like to supply your own snack, feel free.  Please let the MOPPETS volunteer know at drop off.
  • If you would like to furnish a snack, craft or fun activity for your child's room (birthday, special occasion) let me know!
  • Introduce yourself (and your child) to our volunteers. We want to make sure they feel appreciated for taking the time to help us become better Moms through MOPS.  We could not have MOPS without them!
Thank you so much for making this a great year for Moms, our children and our volunteers.

MOPPETS Leader
